Seven Questions With… Laura Lexx

Laura Lexx is a sweet-talking comedian with a surprisingly sharp bite. Lexx has been making waves in recent years since her 2018 show Trying was met with high criticial acclaim. She is soon to embark on a tour of her latest show, Knee Jerk.

1) How did you decide to approach developing Knee Jerk after the huge success of Trying?

Well, this tour is actually an amalgamation of those two shows… they naturally link in to each other really well and while Trying is more personal and Knee Jerk is more socially-focused, they work very well as companion pieces. I’m excited to be able to do some of the material from Trying without the full emotional narrative, and to update some of the social politics of Knee Jerk to make it up to date for 2020. It’s really refreshing to have more than an hour to play with and to be able to play with the audience a lot more because there are no time constraints.

2) What motivates you as a performer?

I am at my happiest on stage… it’s where I feel relaxed, confident, in control and like a professional. It’s the thing in my life I really back myself to do and while I’m doing it my mind is focused and calm. I think other people talk about running or games or something in a way that’s similar to how I feel about being on stage… it’s a time where my extraneous thoughts are all focused on what I’m doing and I can shut out white noise. I just love being on that stage and I love making people laugh. It’s what I was born to do.

3) Where would you go if you could go anywhere?

Oh… lots of places. I would love to go to Japan, I would love to go to Canada. I usually want to go home. I like beautiful places and stuff but I’m a very people-based person. I’ll go where the people are, I don’t much care about places without people.

4) What is the worst thing anyone could say to you right now?

They could tell me I have upset someone. I hate upsetting people. I try and be very careful about what I put out into the world and I’m not good at confrontation. I hate the idea that I’d be responsible for hurting someone.

5) How have you changed as a comic over the past five years?

I’ve got much much faster at finding the funny. I’m more confident in what I’m doing and whether something has potential so now I can get myself to a point where things are working much quicker. I can make my natural way of wanting to do things work rather than trying to adapt everything to make it fit what I’m supposed to be doing.

6) What are you bored of?

Assuming the worst of people. I am so bored of the current climate where everyone wants an easy reason for things being wrong and the easy reason is always to just label a bunch of people as awful. It’s mind-numbingly single minded, crass and unhelpful. I wish we could all assume nobody is out to hurt us until we have to assume that.

7) What character trait do you most envy in others?

The ability to not be jealous and to celebrate other people’s success. I like being enthusiastic about other people but I feel like naturally I run to jealousy first and then have to work my round to being a better person. I’d like to not have that first hurdle and just to go straight to being a cheerleader for other people.

What? Knee Jerk

What are your feelings as you enter into this year’s Edinburgh Fringe season?

Excited. I had a really good time last year and it’s given me so much energy to race back in with a really tight show full of punchy ideas and things I’m excited to share with an audience.

What is the premise of your Edinburgh show this year?

I’m looking at fear this year… my own big fears, but also how fear seems to charge people up to behave in certain ways. I’m using the techniques I assembled during my own mental health therapy to try to get to the bottom of some of the root fears that are fuelling the way people react to certain things within society.

What is the biggest obstacle you face(d) while putting this show together?

Nerves about getting it wrong. I think I worry a lot about being complicit through silence on things I don’t agree with, but then I am constantly scared too about trying to be vocal in case I’m not the most informed person on the planet. Hopefully with this show I’ve found a way to speak up and be supportive of things that are important to me.

Has your attitude towards the Fringe changed at all in recent years?

Yes, hugely. I’ve seen through some of the more ridiculous, energy sapping aspects of it and started to see it for what it is: a fun, colourful wonderful playground that only has to feel competitive if you succumb to that pressure. It’s hard to go in focusing forward but you really have to put your blinkers on and go in looking for the highs.

Do you have any other Edinburgh show recommendations?

Jess Fostekew’s show ‘Hench’ and Paul F Taylor’s show ‘Odd Paul’. I saw previews of both of them at Machynlleth Festival and I’m SO excited to see them again once all the fine-tuning is done – they were so good.

Where would you like to be in a year’s time?

I don’t mind as long as I feel calm there.

Are you prepared for what this year’s Edinburgh Fringe has in store for you?

Nope! Never a done a show this personal before so I’m expecting to get slapped about the face a bit with all sorts of things I didn’t know were going to get me.

What is the premise of your Edinburgh show this year?

In 2016 I stopped wanting to be alive, this show is about how I started wanting to be alive again. It’s about anti-depressants, soap, anxiety, babies and camping. I couldn’t love it more.

What was the biggest obstacle you face(d) while putting this show together?

Making sure people knew it was ok to laugh… making sure they knew I was fine with the jokes and in control of them. It’s hard to make people laugh when they’re worried about you and that’s an interesting line to walk with personal comedy.

Who would most enjoy your show?

People looking for something with belly laughs and vulnerability; something from a comic who is looking to stretch themselves and have fun somewhere new.

Do you have any other Edinburgh show recommendations?

Tonnes, but first you have to promise to come and see mine and then I’ll recommend Felicity Ward, The Noise Next Door, Sara Barron and George Rigden.

What is your favourite thing about Edinburgh as a city?

The smell… nothing beats that smell.

What are your plans for after the festival?

Finding a baby.

Laura Lexx is a sweet-talking comedian with a surprisingly sharp bite, epitomised, perhaps, by her recent run-in with a sexist heckler, which received thousands of hits on YouTube. Laura will be performing her latest show Tyrannosaurus Lexx at the Edinburgh Festival.
To learn more about Laura, I asked her these seven questions…

Review: Bramall Comedy Night, Laura Lexx, Andy White & Christian Reilly

March 11, 2015 by Becca Moody 1 Comment

Last Thursday brought the latest comedy night at the University of Birmingham, and, not wanting to break tradition, I obviously went along.

Laura Lexx

Laura Lexx

The compère for the evening was the lovely Laura Lexx, a comedian I had never heard of before, and proof that going to comedy nights such as these are vital for comedy fans who want to expand their knowledge and understanding of who is actually out there performing material. Laura is one of the sweetest and most delightful comedians I’ve watched perform, who was able to balance her well-spoken, polite voice with the occasional dark humour and abstract concepts. She was also the first person to ever pick on me in the “who-are-you-what-do-you-do?” sort of sense which is surprising given the number of gigs I’ve attended over the years, but maybe more of a shock for my friend who was also singled out and had never been to an event like that before.

There is something a little magic about hearing stand up material about the specific area you live in, and, coming from Birmingham himself, Andy White was able to give that to us. Referring to an audience member from Harborne as “Your Majesty” and making humorous digs at Birmingham City University (not to be confused with the university he was performing at), Andy crafted a set that was meaningful to the people in the room. With his naturally chilled manner and remarkable red velvet jacket, this comedian comes across very confidently on stage, which is always reassuring as an audience member in a relatively small crowd.

Christian Reilly

Christian Reilly

Christian Reilly was the only comic on the bill who I’d heard material from before, by which I mean occasionally hearing him sing a couple of songs on TotalRock radio with Jeff Leach. As well as obvious musical skill, Reilly has an aptitude for pushing boundaries with risky subject matter which gives his songs an extra, often sinister, layer. His style of comedy is all-or-nothing; he takes a stance regarding a topical issue or popular celebrity and works from there, incorporating harsh criticisms hidden in between bouts of silly humour. A highlight would have to be an Avril Lavigne song in the style of Brian Ferry.

As always, the comedy night at the University of Birmingham certainly did not disappoint and, again, I encourage you to join me at next month’s event on April 9th.
