March Comedian of the Month #57, Chris McCausland

May 3, 2019 by Becca Moody Leave a Comment
Each Comedian of the Month on MoodyComedy is a comic who has never previously featured on the website. Reasons for selection can include various current projects the comedian is involved with, or perhaps recent appearances on television programmes or podcasts. There is no strict criteria however, as Comedian of the Month simply stands as a collection of recommendations, highlighting interesting and original aspects of certain comedians and their work.

Chris McCausland is a stand-up comedian and actor from Liverpool. While Chris refers to himself as ‘the blind comedian’, he doesn’t want to be defined by this. His blindness and attitude towards his blindness, however, makes his stand-up all the more compelling to witness. The nerve of a blind person who willingly stands on stage in front of an audience he cannot see, is undeniably impressive. And hearing anecdotes from the perspective of a person without sight is a unique experience in itself, as McCausland is able to show his audience a new way of approaching ideas.

Here we have a comic who is unwaveringly calm and collected on stage, appearing as though nothing could ever faze him. In this way, Chris is able to take his audience under his wing and we immediately trust him to deliver consistent and genuinely enjoyable observations from own life experiences.

Chris McCausland’s comedy is playful, tongue-in-cheek, and if he isn’t a household name within the year I will be surprised. Chris’s Live at the Apollo set from January 2018 is still available on BBC iPlayer

February Comedian of the Month #56, Alfie Brown

Each Comedian of the Month on MoodyComedy is a comic who has never previously featured on the website. Reasons for selection can include various current projects the comedian is involved with, or perhaps recent appearances on television programmes or podcasts. There is no strict criteria however, as Comedian of the Month simply stands as a collection of recommendations, highlighting interesting and original aspects of certain comedians and their work.

Alfie Brown is confident comic performer who is not scared of being the loser of the story. Ambitious with his writing and a fan of complex and sometimes difficult ideas, this comedian is loudly offering his audiences something new and exciting.

There’s something about Brown’s onstage demeanour that seems somewhat tortured, but it doesn’t feel like a dramatic pretence. His candidness makes him an amicable performer, with his painfully honest anecdotes serving as a means for his audience to get to know him. His stories are often crude, but not unbelievable or contrived, and this is incredibly refreshing to see. There isn’t too much ego here, as Alfie is a rather self-deprecating performer, making him likeable no matter how challenging the jokes may be.

© Alfie Brown

Alfie, alongside fellow comedian Jessie Cave, created the YouTube comedy series Chop Logic in which they documented the ins and outs of their relationship. At its best, the series is breath-taking, capturing the minutiae of life as a couple, with all its ups and downs. The pair are brutally honest about their relationship, in an enjoyably exaggerated fashion but there is a definite sense of genuine feeling and truth deep in there.

Alfie Brown is currently touring his latest show Lunatic across the UK.

January Comedian of the Month #55, Georgia Hardstark and Karen Kilgariff

There is no strict criteria however, as Comedian of the Month simply stands as a collection of recommendations, highlighting interesting and original aspects of certain comedians and their work.

January’s Comedian(s) of the Month is the American comedy podcasting duo behind the hit series, My Favorite Murder.

Television host Georgia Hardstark and comedy writer and comedian Karen Kilgariff teamed up in 2014 to create the My Favorite Murder podcast, where they talk about the crime stories that have shocked them most over the years and shaped the way they view the world. They also talk about prolific murders from their hometowns as well as the hometowns of their listeners who send their stories in.

From JonBenét Ramsey to the Alphabet Murders, this podcast is for anyone who has an interest in murder and crime that they worry might be a bit unhealthy. And Karen and Georgia are here to tell us that it’s not abnormal (or at least, they are as abnormal as you). But with nearly a quarter of a million Twitter followers and over 300k page likes on Facebook, it’s clear that those of us who obsess a little over true crime are certainly not alone.

And even if true crime isn’t really your thing, it’s hard not to get drawn in by Karen and Georgia’s lighthearted conversations. They’re not afraid of taboo, and as a result, My Favorite Murder is a surprisingly liberating listening experience.

Devilishly funny and endlessly fascinating, these two comic minds have created a franchise like no other, and My Favorite Murder continues to go from strength to strength.

December Comedian of the Month #54, Liam Williams

Each Comedian of the Month on MoodyComedy is a comic who has never previously featured on the website. Reasons for selection can include various current projects the comedian is involved with, or perhaps recent appearances on television programmes or podcasts. There is no strict criteria however, as Comedian of the Month simply stands as a collection of recommendations, highlighting interesting and original aspects of certain comedians and their work.

Leeds comic Liam Williams has an acerbic demeanour; a comic voice that the ear can’t help but listen to. He’s a comedian who demands some kind of response from every listener, but not in a grandiose or loud way. He is a relatively quiet speaker, calculating and calm, and something about him is rather captivating.

Liam Williams

In 2014, Williams created a series of Comedy Blaps for Channel 4 which are still available on YouTube and All 4. This is a series of 3 short videos (around 4 mins each) which explore themes of ‘Things’ ‘Monotony’ and ‘Home’. Other creators of these comedy blaps include Rose Matafeo, Tez Ilyas and Sam Simmons.

These comedy shorts really showcase Williams’ writing skill. The narratives have unexpected twists, and the dialogue is sarcastic yet poetic, making an almost uncomfortable watch. And similarly, Williams’ BBC Radio 4 series Ladhood has the comic’s trademark aptitude for captivating description, teamed with his unmistakable deep, rumbling vocal delivery.

November Comedian of the Month #53, Ignacio Lopez

Reasons for selection can include various current projects the comedian is involved with, or perhaps recent appearances on television programmes or podcasts. There is no strict criteria however, as Comedian of the Month simply stands as a collection of recommendations, highlighting interesting and original aspects of certain comedians and their work.

Ignacio Lopez is a Spanish stand-up comic and MC currently based in Cardiff. MoodyComedy saw him acting as MC at Buffalo Comedy’s Christmas showcase, and he was undeniably the linchpin of the whole affair.

Lopez is a very playful comic who isn’t afraid to make brutal asides about members of the audience. He doesn’t even try to cover them with a fake gasp or a laugh or some kind of appeasement. He’s pretty reckless with it, but it is this that gives him his charm. Ignacio is so endearing that his audiences feel obliged to give him a free pass; we don’t care if he rips us apart on stage, because he’s bloody funny with it.

Ignacio Lopez

And paired with this affable demeanour, Ignacio has a distinguished ability to generate relevant anecdotes for his current audience, seemingly having something interesting to say about any topic or situation. This flexibility will stand him in good stead and no doubt he’ll be making an even bigger impression on the club circuit in years to come.

October Comedian of the Month #52, Athena Kugblenu

There is no strict criteria however, as Comedian of the Month simply stands as a collection of recommendations, highlighting interesting and original aspects of certain comedians and their work.

Athena Kugblenu is an effortless performer who is incredibly easy to listen to. She expertly blends topics of varying significance, blurring the line between political debate and more light-hearted social topics. In doing this, Athena is allowing political discussion to become the norm within her comedy; she makes it accessible, understandable and less worrying.

© Michael de Leon

Kugblenu is centred in herself and confident in front of a crowd, meaning that the laughs come easily. Often exploring themes involving race and identity, Athena champions her African-Indian heritage, whilst also considering wider social areas such as racism and democracy. She is tackling big, big topics here, but this comic brings a kind of peace with her on stage, meaning that audiences feel comfortable under her care.

Eloquent, perceptive and laid-back, Athena Kugblenu is a comedian who has fantastic potential. Expect to see a lot more from this intelligent comic.

September Comedian of the Month #51, Robin Clyfan

October 8, 2018 by Becca Moody Leave a Comment
Each Comedian of the Month on MoodyComedy is a comic who has never previously featured on the website. Reasons for selection can include various current projects the comedian is involved with, or perhaps recent appearances on television programmes or podcasts. There is no strict criteria however, as Comedian of the Month simply stands as a collection of recommendations, highlighting interesting and original aspects of certain comedians and their work.

As one half of former double act Robin and Partridge (with fellow comic Charlie Partridge), Robin Clyfan has had his fair share of experience as a comedy performer, but only recently has he forayed into solo stand up. But he’s a natural and skilled story teller, so this transition doesn’t feel forced.

Listening to Clyfan talk to Cariad Lloyd on the GriefCast podcast, it’s hard not to be drawn in by Clyfan’s warm personality. And there are lots of aspects to this comedian’s background that are fascinating. For one, as the son of parents named Clive and Anne, the surname Clyfan (that he shares with his twin sister) is actually a compound of his parents’ forenames.

© Ollie Harrop

He brought his debut solo show, The Sea Is Big Enough To Take It to the Edinburgh Festival this August. As the child of an activist mother, who fought restrictive gender roles and sadly passed away quite recently, this show explores his relationship with his mother as a child and in later years.

He considers the difference between his own and his parents’ generations, and opens his audience up to his experiences of being raised by a politically charged feminist activist. And he speaks about his family with undeniable love and tenderness, in such a way that makes Clyfan a truly compelling performer to listen to.

August Comedian of the Month #50, Kiri Pritchard-McLean

September 7, 2018 by Becca Moody Leave a Comment
Each Comedian of the Month on MoodyComedy is a comic who has never previously featured on the website. Reasons for selection can include various current projects the comedian is involved with, or perhaps recent appearances on television programmes or podcasts. There is no strict criteria however, as Comedian of the Month simply stands as a collection of recommendations, highlighting interesting and original aspects of certain comedians and their work.

There has been a lot of noise around Kiri Pritchard-McLean over the last couple of years. She’s part of the award-winning comedy sketch group Gein’s Family Giftshop, though never appearing on stage with the group, as well as being a very successful stand-up comic in her own right (having received an abundance of 5 star reviews for her show Victim, Complex at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe).

Kiri Pritchard-McLean

Pritchard-McLean’s comedy is down-to-earth in a way that really invites listeners into her world. It’s as if your guilty conscious, where all your darkest fears and thoughts hide, could talk, but there’s something celebratory in it. McLean’s comedy is honest and confessional, but it’s as though she’s never questioned being so open, it just comes naturally. She is what she is, and this authenticity is a valuable asset. Managing to take difficult personal topics and make them devilishly funny, whilst still maintaining their emotional significance and impact, proves McLean to be a strong voice on the comedy circuit. She is exuberant and compelling, and will no doubt blossom all the more in the coming months and years.

McLean is also the brains behind Amusical, alongside Dave Cribb. The show consists of stand-up comedians going head to head performing their favourite songs from film and television, with the audience deciding the winner. The format has recently been picked up by Comedy Central, with McLean and Jayde Adams acting as hosts.

July Comedian of the Month #49, Chris Washington

August 12, 2018 by Becca Moody Leave a Comment
Each Comedian of the Month on MoodyComedy is a comic who has never previously featured on the website. Reasons for selection can include various current projects the comedian is involved with, or perhaps recent appearances on television programmes or podcasts. There is no strict criteria however, as Comedian of the Month simply stands as a collection of recommendations, highlighting interesting and original aspects of certain comedians and their work.

Chris Washington is a very enjoyable performer to listen to, largely down to his admirably laid-back delivery. This comic is down to earth and confident, and he doesn’t try to allude to something he is not.

Performing his 2017 show Dream Big (Within Reason) on the latest series of Live at the BBC, Washington talks about having small ambitions, not through fear of failure, but due to being genuinely content with his lot. He appreciates the small things in life; he’s got a Dyson for downstairs and a Dyson for upstairs.

Chris Washington

His anecdotes are idiosyncratic, yet believable, with hints of loving nostalgia for his school days interwoven within them. And the effect is a heart-warming one. Chris has a way to his comedy that reminds us of the simple pleasures of childhood, but also of where we’re at now. This show encourages stopping and looking back on your life, with all its peaks and troughs, taking a deep breath and assessing what is important, and what to feel grateful for.

Chris Washington, as well as clearly being a nice guy, is a performer who understands how to give just enough of himself to his audience, allowing us to relate to aspects of him but leaving us wanting more.

June Comedian of the Month #48, Pippa Evans

July 21, 2018 by Becca Moody Leave a Comment
Each Comedian of the Month on MoodyComedy is a comic who has never previously featured on the website. Reasons for selection can include various current projects the comedian is involved with, or perhaps recent appearances on television programmes or podcasts. There is no strict criteria however, as Comedian of the Month simply stands as a collection of recommendations, highlighting interesting and original aspects of certain comedians and their work.

An improviser and singer, Pippa Evans is an enigmatic figure on stage. She knows how to command the space, and her audience. Having said in recent interviews that she sees herself as more of an entertainer than a stand up comedian, this does well for helping us understand just what this performer is.

Evans is perhaps best known for her onstage character, the bordering-on-terrifying American singer Loretta Maine, but also her role in the improv sketch group, Showstopper!, where the cast are tasked with the goal of creating a completely unique, improvised musical from scratch every time they perform.

Pippa Evans

Pippa also co-founded the Sunday Assembly with Sanderson Jones in 2013, a non-religious community space for people to socialise in and contemplate and celebrate life itself. Stressing that it is not an atheist church, this grain of an idea has spread into a vast organisation, with assemblies being held in London, New York, Australia and the Netherlands, to name just a few.

There are talks instead of sermons and pop songs instead of hymns. And what it provides is a safe space for people who want to feel a part of something, which is reminiscent of the very role that stand up comedy plays for many audience members and performers alike. It is clear that Pippa is an advocate of effective communication, and on top of that, she is a sharp comedy writer and a unique musical talent.

For more information, follow Pippa Evans on Twitter, or visit her website.
