Who? Dave Bibby
What? Crazy Cat Lad-y
Where? PBH’s Free Fringe @ Globe Bar – Globe (Venue 161)
When? 16:45

What are your feelings as you enter into this year’s Edinburgh Fringe season?

The closer it gets the more excited I am. Which isn’t always the case but this year I’ve taken more time to get my show how I want it and hopefully I’ll peak at the right time. It’s also my first time doing Free Fringe (PBH) so again my focus is less on admin or worrying about ticket sales and more on the creative side of making something I’m proud of and that people will want to see!

What is the premise of your Edinburgh show this year?

It’s basically just me recreating the 1991 film Hook. I’ve got a bit of the old Peter Pan Syndrome so I put myself in Robin Williams’ (my comedy hero) shoes and think ‘what would Neverland look like if I were Peter Pan?’. Who would be Rufio and the Lost Boys? What would that stupid ass crocodile say to me now I’m older? All told through my usual style of songs, sketches, stand up, storytelling and lots of [friendly!] audience interaction – including the Choose Your Own Adventure Game ‘Drunk Auntie at a Wedding’! Oh and there’s also lots of pictures of my cats Snoop Catty Cat and Bibby Smalls.

What is the biggest obstacle you face(d) while putting this show together?

It is a happy and silly show about looking forwards but the writing process meant looking back and using some darker parts of my life and my mind to inspire it. I always want my shows to be fun but sometimes combining that with honest discussions about dealing with stress and anxiety made the initial writing stage quite difficult. But I’m so glad I went there because I think this is the most honest thing I’ve ever written.

Has your attitude towards the Fringe changed at all in recent years?

It’s easy to get a bit down about the Fringe because the wealthier acts end up sucking attention away. But having watched dozens of shows down the years and spoken to a lot of other comedian friends I’m so excited to do the Free Fringe this year. The general consensus is that is where the most fun is to be had and the most originality.

Do you have any other Edinburgh show recommendations?

Well yeah I’m also doing a live version of my football show/ podcast Jim and Dave Have Lost the Dressing Room. I also love what Lewis Doherty does and the line up in my venue, Globe Bar, is amazing. Just stick around for all of those I’d say!

Where would you like to be in a year’s time?

My next show Life: The Gameshow is already at the back of my head shouting to be let out so I’ll probably be answering your questions about why everything I said in 2019 is horse shit but I’ve figured it all out so LISTEN TO ME NOW!

Lead Pencil: The Edinburgh Interviews 2018

July 31, 2018 by Becca Moody Leave a Comment
Who? Louise Beresford, Maddie Rice and Dave Bibby
What? Lead Pencil
Where? Underbelly Cowgate (venue 61)
When? 19:40

Are you prepared for what this year’s Edinburgh Fringe has in store for you?

Why, what have people been saying? They been saying we haven’t been working hard? Who said that? Was it Noel Edmonds? Prick. We’re ready. Tell Edmonds we’re ready.

What is the premise of your Edinburgh show this year?

Our uber-famous 90’s TV kids show legends The Art Team are doing a reunion that will most definitely not go wrong and descend into a frantic hour of sex, drugs and an investigation into the suspicious death of our beloved mascot, Mr Sausage. Everyone’s a suspect. Especially Noel fricking Edmonds!

What was the biggest obstacle you face(d) while putting this show together?

Brexit. Also we we’re literally on the other side of the world from each other for most of this year. January – June Maddie was touring Fleabag in Australia. She then came back in time for Dave to start his World Cup show, which then finished as Louise started rehearsals for her new one-woman show. So yeah mainly Brexit.

Who would most enjoy your show?

Anyone who knows the lyrics to the Fresh Prince theme tune. Our show is packed with 90’s tunes: big shout out to Ini Kamoze, Britney and B*witched! Should be fun.

Do you have any other Edinburgh show recommendations?

DON’T MAKE A SPREADSHEET! I mean, of course, book ahead if there’s someone you really wanna see. But it’s an ARTS FESTIVAL. It’s about creativity and spontaneity. The next big stars do not have thousands of pounds to spend on PR and huge billboards. They’re in a shitty little room somewhere – take a punt! Also add Louise’s show (sorry) at Assembly and Maddie’s shows ‘Pickle Jar’ and ‘Zazu’ at Underbelly to your spreadsheets.

What is your favourite thing about Edinburgh as a city?

The climate. It’s cool and rains a lot. Usually this is the thing we hate most but we’re currently sat in a boiling hot London Itsu sweating like an Edinburgh sketch group who haven’t actually finished writing their show yet.

What are your plans for after the festival?

Probs sort out Brexit.

The Edinburgh Interviews 2017: Dave Bibby

August 3, 2017 by Becca Moody Leave a Comment
Stand up Dave Bibby is performing his debut show Nobody Puts Bibby in the Corner at this year’s Edinburgh Festival. The show is a showcase of sketches, improvisation and storytelling, with a variety of comedy characters and accents to delight audiences. Dave will be performing at Underbelly, Cowgate throughout August.

1) What excites you most about the Edinburgh Festival?

There is still that little spark about the place every year where someone comes out of nowhere to get people excited. I mean, for every one of these there’s 50 people who have paid their life savings to a PR ‘guru’ who has never seen them perform, but like the scene of a tragic event look beyond the hype headlines and you’ll start to see good people on the fringes.

2) What is your first Edinburgh show about?

Nobody Puts Bibby in the Corner is my first solo venture north of the wall. It’s comedy tapas – a mix of storytelling, stand up, sketch, songs and even a little gameshow element as well.

3) Does your comedy attract a certain type of audience?

Drunks. Lots of drunks. Though my show is packed with audience interaction where the audience become the stars – the joke is always on me. So my audiences are fun and increasingly confident. But mainly drunk.

4) What is the worst experience you’ve had with Edinburgh accommodation?

One year we threw a massive house party and my flatmate forgot to mention there was a viewing the following morning as the landlord was selling. An estate agent turned up with a startled young couple and climbed over piles of Edinburgh Festival’s most despicable (and unprofessional) sleeping comedians.

5) What is your most treasured memory of your comedy career so far?

Getting trolled. We (my sketch group Lead Pencil) performed live from the prestigious BBC Festival stage for Radio 4 and got our first Twitter troll. I have a section in my show where I put some abuse on the screen from 10 years of #showbiz. But there’s nothing like your first random troll to make you feel like you are making it – nobody trolls nobodies.

6) What show will you definitely be seeing at the festival this year?

Spencer Jones does The Herbert in ‘The Audition’. He’s my fave dickhead. Also some amazing one woman shows to look out for – ‘Victim’ at The Pleasance and a little known show called ‘Fleabag’ at Underbelly.

7) What do you hope to gain from the Edinburgh Festival this year?

Weight.

8) What do you imagine your last ever show will be about?

It will be called ‘Hasta La Vista Bibby’ and will be a one-man retelling of ‘Labyrinth’ with a finale where I reach out and touch David Bowie in Heaven like The Creation of Adam… except I die at the end. Every day for a month.
