Nick Elleray: The Edinburgh Interviews 2018

Who? Nick Elleray
What? It’s Been Emotional
Where? Just the Tonic at The Grassmarket Centre (venue 27)
When? 16:40

Are you prepared for what this year’s Edinburgh Fringe has in store for you?

If I may paraphrase Donald Rumsfeld: I am prepared for the known knowns. I can do very little about the known unknowns and unknown unknowns. This is the only point where I will be referring to Donald Rumsfeld.

What is the premise of your Edinburgh show this year?

It’s a big old look at the rich and diverse emotional ecosystem of the middle-aged Australian male.

What was the biggest obstacle you face(d) while putting this show together?

Convincing myself that people wanted to hear about what I was joking about.

Who would most enjoy your show?

People who dig a mellow, thoughtful vibe, man.

Do you have any other Edinburgh show recommendations?

Richard Todd, Sunil Patel, Sindhu Vee, Heidi Regan.

What is your favourite thing about Edinburgh as a city?

The late-night pizza guy at Moratti on Cowgate remembers me and my order every year when I come back. I always look forward to my first visit to the shop, even though we’ve barely said more than “Hello my friend!” to each other.

What are your plans for after the festival?

Take this show to my home country and see if they reject me and my British influences like a hamster Mum spurning her children because they smell funny.

What? Peachy

Are you prepared for what this year’s Edinburgh Fringe has in store for you?

In a way there’s less pressure because the debut is done, the first one is out the way and now I know more what to expect. But then flip side there’s more pressure to deliver to the same standard as you did last time! I feel like once my show is in a shape I’m happy with, I’ll be able to plough through the month… it’s just getting to that stage that’s the hard part!

What is the premise of your Edinburgh show this year?

It very loosely follows on from last year, but it’s in no way a sequel. It’s about my life in the last year, how things took a turn for the better and it’s definitely a more upbeat, positive show. It’s about pushing through and push ups.

What was the biggest obstacle you face(d) while putting this show together?

This year, it’s been the fact I don’t actually want to go back to Edinburgh. The financial strain it puts on an act, and the fact you have to scrimp and save all year to be able to pay for it is just obscene and causes a lot of stress and anxiety. But because of the great run I had last year, I totally get that people WANT me to go back and of course from an audience that’s a huge compliment. I’m flattered that audiences are excited to see more of me, but at the same time at the back of my mind there’s this constant niggle, this worry about money and about not being good enough and letting people down.

Who would most enjoy your show?

Anyone with a sense of humour, who’s not too easily offended, doesn’t mind a few swearsies and is up for a good time. This is also my Tinder bio.

Do you have any other Edinburgh show recommendations?

YES! Two double acts are on top of my list – Raymond and Mr Timpkins who I’m genuinely excited about and also Harry & Chris who are just joyous. I’m looking forward to debuts from Heidi Regan & Sindhu Vee. Returning shows from last year’s debutantes Tom Houghton and Kwame Asante.

What is your favourite thing about Edinburgh as a city?

Macaroni pies.

What are your plans for after the festival?

I’d like to take some time off as I’ve had an incredibly full on year. Maybe a few days just to chill out, read some books, do sweet fuck all. Oh, and I really REALLY need to learn to drive.

Pity Laughs: The Edinburgh Interviews 2018

June 26, 2018 by Becca Moody Leave a Comment

© Milo Robinson

Who? Pity Laughs
What? A Tale of Two Gays
Where? Just the Tonic at The Caves (venue 88)
When? 16:05

Are you prepared for what this year’s Edinburgh Fringe has in store for you?

Mark: It’s always difficult to be fully and totally prepared but I think we’re more prepared than we ever have been before. Content-wise, having been up last year with a show that had similar themes, I think we know more clearly what you can and can’t get away with and where the “line” is for the audience. People will laugh about bereavement and they will laugh about you being depressed and being a closeted gay, they just need to be told that they can and it’s up to you to create that environment.

Will: Logistics-wise – not that I’m at all interested in logistics (I’m gay!)-

Mark: So am I!

Will: Hush, you! (They make out, cat-fight then make love).

Will: (Zipping up his fly) Where was I? Oh yea, we’ve now got two and three years’ worth of Fringes under our belts respectively –

Mark: And all sorts besides!

Will: Hush!!

The cycle repeats itself.

Will: (Cleaning up) Right, serious now, this is getting silly. So after our previous experiences we’re much wiser and savvier. We’ve got 5 previews of our show booked in in the early summer where last year we did none (!), we’ve already got our publicity being drawn up and developed and we’ve thought through marketing strategies for the show, so we’re a bit further on than usual…!

What is the premise of your Edinburgh show this year?

Mark: We’re both gay and my parents are dead.

Will: I’ll say!

Mark: The premise is that Will (who functions as an audience and, reading further, a societal surrogate) ‘wants’ my bereavement.

Will: This is all true by the way. I would be genuinely thrilled if my idiot parents died a horrible death.

Mark: As you can see, he is jealous of my ‘get-out card’ and because his life hasn’t been sad enough, he has chosen to make one up. So Will tells the audience his fictional life by means of his parody gay literotica Man to Man-

Will: -while Mark performs stand up about his real life; the travails of being gay and losing your parents at a young age.

Mark: While the topics are dark and elements outrageous, it’s also a very silly show.

Will: We love making each other laugh about being gay, and I’m always making jokes at Mark’s expense about not having parents (e.g. hey Mark, your parents are dead, you stupid prick!!!), and so we just want to make other people laugh.

What was the biggest obstacle you face(d) while putting this show together?

Will: We also perform separately. Mark is on the London stand-up circuit while my gay literotica is available as a blog (https://man2manfiction.blogspot.co.uk) and coming soon as a podcast.

Mark: The hardest part-

Will: Has been my cock!

Mark sighs, then obligingly sucks Will’s proffered penis.

Mark: … has been bringing the two elements together in a way that makes the show more than a sum of its parts. In general we find split bills unenjoyable and we don’t advertise our show as one; it’s a show on its own terms.

Who would most enjoy your show?

Will: Perverts.

Mark: The show certainly isn’t for the faint-hearted. Will’s sections do contain some pretty harrowing (yet hilarious) descriptions of gay sex. They’re intended to lampoon what straight people think gay sex is like; in practice the irony is lost on quite a lot of straight people who emerge believing that “all gay men do is anal sex” (a genuine quote).

Will: That’s all I do.

Mark: I do make jokes about being an orphan and about his parents’ deaths, from cancer and suicide. The description is pretty clear on all our publicity and ticket selling sites and we also have content warnings on the door, so we do hope that anyone who might be triggered doesn’t end up at the show!

Will: To cut Mark’s long and boring story short, I couldn’t care less about people being triggered. It’s natural selection if you ask me. If you love smut and/or dark comedy you’ll love the show, and if you don’t come and see it your homo- and orphanphobic.

Do you have any other Edinburgh show recommendations?

Mark: Glad you asked! Our production company (StraightUp) is bringing up two other shows, Space Doctor, a sci-fi parody running at Gilded Balloon’s Wine Bar at 12.15pm every day, and Dank Verse, a stand-up show from our colleague and performance poet Will Penswick, 2-16 August 4.15pm, Laughing Horse @ the Place. We’d recommend both highly! Other than that, Willis & Vere always serve up an absolute feast of metatheatre, so A Serious Play About World War II will be worth catching, and we think Adam Hess is the funniest human being on the planet, so we wouldn’t miss him.

Will: I’d only recommend our shows. I’m a stick in the mud.

What is your favourite thing about Edinburgh as a city?

Will: The rain. Not being able to buy booze in shops after 10pm, but it’s ok because the pubs are so cheap. The hills and the fact that half the city seems to be on a different plane to the other. Flyering.

Mark: Come on now. The Meadows when it’s sunny are an amazing place to rehearse or chill out. The vibe around the festival is amazing.

Will: Ha! Gayyy!

What are your plans for after the festival?

Mark: We host two monthly comedy nights in Barnes and Clapham, both South London, and are taking on a few more, so we’ll be focusing on those immediately after the festival as well as hoping to get Space Doctor a London transfer somewhere. Then towards the late autumn we’ll start thinking about Fringe 2019… when we’ve caught up on some sleep!

Will: I don’t plan to sleep at all, I just plan to have sex with men.

Lloyd Langford: The Edinburgh Interviews 2018

June 25, 2018 by Becca Moody Leave a Comment

© Andy Laing

Who? Lloyd Langford
What? Why The Big Face?
Where? Banshee Labyrinth (venue 156)
When? 22:00

Are you prepared for what this year’s Edinburgh Fringe has in store for you?

Having been coming to the Fringe since 2002, I hope I will be sufficiently prepared. I will bring plenty waterproofs, blu-tack, vitamins, woolly hats, prophylactics and false but powerful rumours about rival comedians.

What is the premise of your Edinburgh show this year?

It’s largely about my break-up with John Robins.

What was the biggest obstacle you face(d) while putting this show together?

Mothra.

Who would most enjoy your show?

Enemies of John Robins.

Do you have any other Edinburgh show recommendations?

I heartily recommend Tom Walker. He’s a character created by comedian Jonathan Pie. He’s a sort of bitter, right-wing actor. The commitment to the role is incredible.

What is your favourite thing about Edinburgh as a city?

The cobbles.

What are your plans for after the festival?

Are you coming on to me?

Laura Lexx: The Edinburgh Interviews 2018

June 24, 2018 by Becca Moody Leave a Comment

© Karla Gowlett

Who? Laura Lexx
What? Trying
Where? Gilded Balloon Teviot (venue 14)
When? 17:15

Are you prepared for what this year’s Edinburgh Fringe has in store for you?

Nope! Never a done a show this personal before so I’m expecting to get slapped about the face a bit with all sorts of things I didn’t know were going to get me.

What is the premise of your Edinburgh show this year?

In 2016 I stopped wanting to be alive, this show is about how I started wanting to be alive again. It’s about anti-depressants, soap, anxiety, babies and camping. I couldn’t love it more.

What was the biggest obstacle you face(d) while putting this show together?

Making sure people knew it was ok to laugh… making sure they knew I was fine with the jokes and in control of them. It’s hard to make people laugh when they’re worried about you and that’s an interesting line to walk with personal comedy.

Who would most enjoy your show?

People looking for something with belly laughs and vulnerability; something from a comic who is looking to stretch themselves and have fun somewhere new.

Do you have any other Edinburgh show recommendations?

Tonnes, but first you have to promise to come and see mine and then I’ll recommend Felicity Ward, The Noise Next Door, Sara Barron and George Rigden.

What is your favourite thing about Edinburgh as a city?

The smell… nothing beats that smell.

What are your plans for after the festival?

Finding a baby.

Imran Yusuf: The Edinburgh Interviews 2018

© Monica Renn

Who? Imran Yusuf
What? Saint, Sinner, Sufi
Where? The Stand’s New Town Theatre (venue 7)
When? 17:30

Are you prepared for what this year’s Edinburgh Fringe has in store for you?

I possess a stoic resolve to endure and an expectant gratitude to enjoy whatever may be at this year’s Fringe, as I am on any other day of the year.

What is the premise of your Edinburgh show this year?

It’s a sort of coming of middle-age premise, where I acknowledge the journey of my adulthood and the kind of people I’ve thought I was along the way and realising that we are and become who we judge. Hence the title Saint, Sinner, Sufi.

What was the biggest obstacle you face(d) while putting this show together?

The guts to do it. The only way to deal with fear is to face it and do the thing that scares you anyway.

Who would most enjoy your show?

Adults who’ve had the kind of life of contrasting experiences that lead them to transform their thinking.

Do you have any other Edinburgh show recommendations?

Probably Nick Dixon, he’s got potential.

What is your favourite thing about Edinburgh as a city?

The friendliness of Scottish people and deep fried mars bars WITH ice cream. Don’t forget the ice cream.

What are your plans for after the festival?

Maybe a nice week away in Belgium and/or The Netherlands.

Scott Bennett: The Edinburgh Interviews 2018

June 23, 2018 by Becca Moody Leave a Comment

© Andy Hollingworth

Who? Scott Bennett
What? Leap Year
Where? Just The Tonic at The Mash House (venue 288)
When? 17:55

Are you prepared for what this year’s Edinburgh Fringe has in store for you?

I was, but now you’ve got me worried as that question sounds like you have sinister plans for me! I don’t think you can ever be prepared for the Fringe. I suppose I am going up with the intention of just enjoying myself and not expecting anything more than that.

What is the premise of your Edinburgh show this year?

The show is about taking a risk to follow a dream at an age when society implies that you should be settled and content. It’s about the realities of pursuing a passion when you have responsibilities, the emotions and guilt that causes and the sacrifices made by others. People say it’s brave to do stand-up comedy. That’s not true; it’s braver to let someone you love do it. I’ve never changed my life in such a big way, so to do so has made me discover who I really am and how your own personality can be a barrier to your attitudes to life. It’s also a bit of a daft show, there are stories about the beauty of owning a shed, being the only daddy at playgroup and the maddening experience of playing crazy golf with a child; seriously, it’s utter hell.

What was the biggest obstacle you face(d) while putting this show together?

Discovering some truths about myself that were genuinely unnerving. It’s also how to make such a personal show accessible and engaging to an audience, but I hope I’ve managed to pull that off.

Who would most enjoy your show?

Anyone who wants to change their life and follow a dream but feels trapped by their circumstances. Also, has a young family and owns a shed.

Do you have any other Edinburgh show recommendations?

Chris Turner’s ‘AAA Batteries (Not Included)’ at The Caves (3-4pm) which I may or may not be a part of…

Chris Washington – ‘You Beauty’

Dan Nightingale – ‘Sex, Drugs and My Nana’s Bungalow’

Rachel Fairburn and Kiri Pritchard Mclean

Hayley Ellis – ‘Once, Twice, Three Times a Hayley’

Mandy Knight

What is your favourite thing about Edinburgh as a city?

During the festival, it’s being able to walk to every gig, which is great. I also love the open spaces and parks. I’m bringing my family with me this year and they are really excited to be based there for the month.

What are your plans for after the festival?

I’m hoping to do some more writing work following on from the projects I worked on for Comedy Central this year. I am also in development with some of the scripts I have written for a sitcom pilot. I will be continuing to film some more projects and comedy shorts with my actress wife Jemma, which we will be putting out online again. I’d also really like to build my audience, with the goal of putting together a little tour in early 2019.

Jake Howie: The Edinburgh Interviews 2018

June 22, 2018 by Becca Moody Leave a Comment

© Rebecca Need-Menear

Who? Jake Howie
What? Read My Lips
Where? Just The Tonic at The Caves (venue 88)
When? 21:30

Are you prepared for what this year’s Edinburgh Fringe has in store for you?

No! And that’s what makes it fun. Anything worth doing in life provides an element of the unknown that you can really learn from, like travel or deep spiritual retreats or summertime dogging.

What is the premise of your Edinburgh show this year?

I’m just a happy-go-lucky Kiwi boy trying to make sense of a world where everyone seems to be talking smack. I want people to talk truth and to speak up against the chorus of voices telling us what to think, so Read My Lips is my quest to decipher what’s going on in our culture and what it really means. There are also a variety of jokes involving bums and my mum (unrelated, FYI).

What was the biggest obstacle you face(d) while putting this show together?

All those nights knocking back Malbec and the unproductive days that follow. Come to think of it, those nights are also my biggest inspiration…

Who would most enjoy your show?

Anyone who is afraid our generation will be defined by clean eating Instagram “influencers” who overuse filters. And anyone who loves sordid sex stories. And queer people. And women. And most men. And nanas! (Except mine… she still thinks I’m straight).

Do you have any other Edinburgh show recommendations?

Are there even any other relevant comedians going up? JK JK! There are too many to name. But Jenny Collier’s A Few Good Jen is a killer show, and I can’t wait to see Angry Emoji Face, which is a split hour of comedy featuring Ryan Dalton and Esther Manito.

What is your favourite thing about Edinburgh as a city?

How you can enjoy a glass of wine and carbs before midday without judgement. And the nature – I see myself going for runs up that big hill/rock thingy in lyrca as I mediate over the spectacular skyline. But let’s be real – I’ll be in a Malbec coma mainlining deep fried goods. But hey – no one will be judging me!

What are your plans for after the festival?

I will be going to Portugal or Italy or somewhere where no one recognises me (OK, that could be absolutely anywhere on earth including my parents’ house) to drink more wine and eat more carbs. Then I’ll be gigging more. So follow me on Instagram @JakeHowieComedy!

George Lewis: The Edinburgh Interviews 2018

June 21, 2018 by Becca Moody Leave a Comment

© Richard Wood

Who? George Lewis
What? A Man, a Plan, a Girl With Fake Tan
Where? Pleasance Courtyard (venue 33)
When? 17:45

Are you prepared for what this year’s Edinburgh Fringe has in store for you?

I think I am. But then I thought I was the first month I did a compilation show up here and ended up sobbing watching a circus show on my own, so who knows.

What is the premise of your Edinburgh show this year?

It’s about the first time I fell in love when I was at school. I decided the way to win her heart was to stop acting like a boy and start acting like a man, specifically Liam Gallagher.

What was the biggest obstacle you face(d) while putting this show together?

My first kid was born very recently. The most wonderful obstacle in the world.

Who would most enjoy your show?

In the hope that they might read this and come along, I’d have to say the Gallagher brothers, Steve Coogan, Chris Morris, Armando Iannucci, Kathy Burke, Eric Cantona, Mel Sykes and my mate’s mum, Mrs Mertz.

Do you have any other Edinburgh show recommendations?

Matt Ewins & Sarah Kendall’s shows are two of my favourites every year. But the line up at the Pleasance Attic (where I’m on) looks brilliant. If you do come and see me (PLEASE DO) then you should spend the day seeing the acts before and after, they are all belting.

What is your favourite thing about Edinburgh as a city?

The local people are really friendly, but also really intimidating. It feels like they would do anything to help you out, but cross them and you will get a headbutt. I also like Arthur’s Seat.

What are your plans for after the festival?

Take the show on tour. If they don’t come to Edinburgh to see me, I’ll go to Barton-Upon-Humber to see them.

Rosie Jones: The Edinburgh Interviews 2018

June 20, 2018 by Becca Moody Leave a Comment

© Aemen Sukkar

Who? Rosie Jones
What? Fifteen Minutes
Where? Pleasance Courtyard (venue 33)
When? 20:30

Are you prepared for what this year’s Edinburgh Fringe has in store for you?

Not quite yet! It takes me the entire year to prepare – physically and mentally – for Edinburgh. I will be ready by the end of July, but right now, it’s a daunting hill in front of me! It’s worth it though, and I definitely think this year’s Fringe will be one to remember. Bring it on!

What is the premise of your Edinburgh show this year?

My show, ‘Fifteen Minutes’, is all about how the first few minutes of my life affected every single minute after that. I have cerebral palsy as a result of not breathing for fifteen minutes at birth (which is a frigging long time to hold your breath, trust me!).

If that quarter of an hour had been different, I would be able-bodied. I’d be a whole different person. In the show, I try to work out who this elusive, ‘able-bodied Rosie’ is. I don’t know for sure, but I’m pretty certain that she’d be a twat!

What was the biggest obstacle you face(d) while putting this show together?

My biggest obstacle, for sure, is my own expectations. They are insanely high. Whenever a ‘bit’ in my show would feel complete, a niggling voice in my head would whisper, ‘No, you can do better, it’s not done yet!”. I just want to make sure that this show is the best show it can be… but boy, it’s hard work.

Who would most enjoy your show?

I’d like to think that the majority of people would enjoy my show! It’s not overtly offensive or controversial; it’s just a little cheeky in places, like me! Although I talk about my own life, I hope that it makes the audience reflect on the choices they’ve made and encourage them to make the most out of their own lives.

Do you have any other Edinburgh show recommendations?

Gosh, there’s so many! This year is so exciting because a lot of my friends are taking up their first hours. Heidi Regan, Catherine Bohart, Sarah Keyworth and Micky Overman are must sees. And for some Tudor mischief, get yourself to Great British Mysteries, who are my very talented Edinburgh housemates! Oh and, Suzi Ruffell, of course. Her shows are always insanely brilliant and full of energy.

What is your favourite thing about Edinburgh as a city?

I’ll tell you what my least favourite thing about Edinburgh is – the flipping cobbles, everywhere! Not great for a wobbler and her walker! As for my favourite thing, it has to be the people; everybody is so friendly and after a day there, it feels like home. It is also a comedians’ playground and I love bumping into friends wherever I turn.

What are your plans for after the festival?

HOLIDAY! I can’t bloody wait, two weeks in Barbados, yes please! After that, who knows? Sit back, recalibrate and work out my next move. I’m very happy about where my career is heading at the moment so ideally more comedy, more writing and more acting. Watch this space!
