Leo Kearse: The Edinburgh Interviews 2019

July 12, 2019 by Becca Moody Leave a Comment
Who? Leo Kearse
What? Transgressive
Where? Gilded Balloon Teviot – Nightclub (Venue 14)
When? 21:15

What are your feelings as you enter into this year’s Edinburgh Fringe season?

I’m scared. I’ve got a proper big promoter producing my show this year in a big room at the Gilded Balloon, so it’s an opportunity for me to do a good show. If this goes well they’ll tour the show, I’ll make money, I’ll maybe get famous. Then I can crush my enemies.

What is the premise of your Edinburgh show this year?

I was banned from my venue at the Perth Fringe in Australia because people complained that my material is transphobic. But I wrote that material with a transgender woman I was dating (a hot one) because I’m so woke I dated a transgender woman. Most people who complained weren’t even transgender – there were straight people who say they’re queer because they think it makes them more interesting, and there were drag queens. Drag is trans blackface. A drag queen complaining about transphobia is like a minstrel complaining about racism. So my show is about the tyranny of ‘wokeness’, victim culture and how all these right on lefty pricks are ruining everything for everyone, including themselves.

What is the biggest obstacle you face(d) while putting this show together?

I’m really lazy. It’s easy to fall into the trap of sitting about all day playing games on my phone and wanking. Everyone applauds Stephen Hawking for pushing forward the boundaries of physics despite his disabilities, but I’d be able to focus and achieve lots if I couldn’t form a fist around my dick. The only thing that really motivates me is spite.

Has your attitude towards the Fringe changed at all in recent years?

I like it because all my friends are there, I make money and it forces me to write new stuff. Anyone who says they lose money at the Fringe is doing it wrong. Likewise, any comedian who says there’s no money on the live circuit is really just saying that they’re too shit to get booked for the good clubs. The importance of the Fringe has dwindled as social media allows people to connect directly with their audience and build a following. But I am too lazy to put up videos all the time. If I had the self discipline to sit at a computer putting subtitles on videos, I’d get a proper job.

Do you have any other Edinburgh show recommendations?

Darius Davies: Persian Of Interest. Darius is hilarious and totally Islamic even though he looks like a white guy. For years I’ve been telling him to do the Muslim thing so that the white saviour-complex diversity fetishising liberal comedy gatekeepers let him on TV. He refused, saying they should book him because he’s funny. It doesn’t work like that – they’d rather book someone who fits their patronising, reductive, box-ticking idea of what an ethnic comedian should be. So now he’s doing a show about being Muslim or Iranian or something so that they let him on TV. He’s very funny. He also MC’s my late night show Hate ‘n’ Live which has a panel of comedians hating on audience suggestions. It’s brilliant raucous improvised fun and we’re doing it in the Big Cave this year.

Where would you like to be in a year’s time?

I don’t know. I’m already doing better than I thought I would. I drive a bright red shiny Audi and I spend winter in the tropics. I’d quite like to get famous and powerful so I can marry a really really hot woman like Melania Trump and smite anyone who has crossed me.

Who? Leo Kearse
What? Right Wing Comedian
Where? Laughing Horse @ Espionage (venue 185)
When? 19:30

Are you prepared for what this year’s Edinburgh Fringe has in store for you?

Yeah totally! I was born ready. I reckon if I wasn’t doing Edinburgh I’d probably be a special forces marine getting sent into the jungle to find out why they keep finding bodies skinned and hanging from trees. I’m like a crocodile.

What is the premise of your Edinburgh show this year?

I used to consider myself a lefty liberal, but I feel that the left has disappeared up its own arse, taking on the worst aspects of the right (discriminating against people based on their demographics; censoring speech; making crimes out of misspeaking). I believe everyone should be treated as an individual and identity politics are reductive and divisive.

I take a scalpel to male feminists, Labour antisemites, fat activists, environmentalists, white male privilege and #MeToo. I present a robust defence of Donald Trump, celebrate consumerism, break down prejudice against the white working class and show the inherent immorality and impracticality of socialism. If you want to escape the liberal bubble of the Edinburgh Fringe and see a raw, hilariously antagonistic show from a man who can’t help speaking his mind, this is the show for you.

What was the biggest obstacle you face(d) while putting this show together?

I kept getting really fun well paid work which got in the way of me writing my show and doing previews. Gigging in Australia, Ibiza, Cyprus… Filming in Belarus, Glasgow, London. It was tough finding time to write the scintillating material I’m known for.

Who would most enjoy your show?

Last year I had people coming to my show because they knew they’d hate it. I don’t get that mentality. I had to turn away people who like comedy so that these fat blue-fringed fucks could come in and moan at me for triggering them or having too much white privilege, or whatever. Only come to my show if you like actual funny comedy like Chris Rock, not the crying and trauma-recounting that seems to pass for comedy at the Fringe these days. If you like anything that wins awards in Edinburgh it’s a safe bet that you’ll hate my show.

Do you have any other Edinburgh show recommendations?

Hate ‘n’ Live – it’s a late night improvised show. The audience write down what they hate, then the suggestions are pulled out of a bucket and the comedians have to say why they hate it, no matter what the suggestion is. It’s a lot more fun and less hateful than it sounds – the atmosphere is electric as the audience waits to see how the comedian will walk the line.

What is your favourite thing about Edinburgh as a city?

It feels really medieval. All these gnarly cobbled alleys and bridges winding over each other. If you squint your eyes you could be an assassin in the 6th century out for revenge against an evil noblelord who skinned everyone in your village and hung them from trees. Then you get him with an arrow right in the neck and he falls over his banquet table, blood squirting over his bodyguards and maidens.

What are your plans for after the festival?

I’m flying off to Ibiza to do a really fun gig for loads of money. Then I’ve got a run of shows in Europe. Then I’ll see if I can get on the telly more and get famous. Then everyone that doubted me will be sorry.

In Leo Kearse’s latest show he claims that he can convince his audience members to vote Tory by offering the joys of the right wing political sphere. Kearse is also the co-creator of Hate ‘n’ Live, where topics suggested by audience members are ‘hated on’ by comedians most nights at the Fringe. He is performing his free show in the Gothic Room at the Three Sisters throughout August.

1) What excites you most about the Edinburgh Festival?

Someone I know always has a really entertaining mental breakdown. In case you think I’m making light of mental illness, yes I am, but I’d be just as entertained if they broke their legs or had a hernia or discovered their children were in fact sired by another man.

2) What was your first Edinburgh show about?

The last two years I’ve done a show as Pun-Man, a spandex clad superhero here to save humanity from observational comedy and long form anecdotal based humour by doing improvised puns based on audience suggestions. It was a really really good show.

3) Does your comedy attract a certain type of audience?

My current show, “I Can Make You Tory”, seems to attract 25% actual red trousered Tories, 70% regular comedy punters who are up for a laugh, and 5% neo-progressive hyper-liberal social justice warrior fat activist cunts who just come to get upset.

4) What is the worst experience you’ve had with Edinburgh accommodation?

Aww man we rented a flat a few years back that was £1,200 each but was falling apart (beds missing slats, no front on drawers, oven wouldn’t close), then when we moved out they said we caused the damage and kept our deposits. Another time I shared with Candy Gigi so the fridge was full of skip loads of rotting vegetables all month.

5) What is your most treasured memory of your comedy career so far?

I’ve made my best friends through comedy but fuck them – my most treasured memories are closing Birmingham Comedy Loft at New Years; I felt like it was the stamp of approval from a top promoter. Also, getting my first twenty minutes at the Comedy Store – it’s the equivalent of becoming a made man in the mafia.

6) What show will you definitely be seeing at the festival this year?

Trevor Lock always makes me forget myself and laugh loads.

7) What do you hope to gain from the Edinburgh Festival this year?

I want to get famous and get loads of money and I want to crush my enemies

8) What do you imagine your last ever show will be about?

My conversion to radical Islam.
